At age 16, most of us are basically just blobs of emotions with very little inhibition. We move through life clumsily, we stumble upon bad decisions, we make choices that see us flying high and crashing low. In this way, on and on we go, haphazardly, and without reprieve.
Some not only experience this but make art out of it too. Which is what 16-year-old Kali Flanagan has done and it's getting her much deserved acclaim.
It's a good thing she keeps being pulled back to the start because that is exactly where she got me -- right from the start. I'm a sucker for an obscure vocal sample and the song opens with a sample from a telephone conversation.
Formerly a part of the band Big Wednesday, when she found the creative process became a necessity, she branched out to start her solo project KALI. As she explains:
“As I got older, I started to have experiences that were much more emotional and personal, and songwriting became an actual necessity instead of something that was fun for me to do."
"Back To The Start" is an enticing dream-pop lick of the lollipop and I look forward to adding more to the candy collection as she, hopefully, releases more.
Is it weird to talk about candy and a 16-year-old in the same post? Or is it weirder to have made that connection? If you've kept up with either mine or Dylan's posts, you're probably familiar with our 'weird', in which case you can just get on with things and simply enjoy this track.
With love,
Your girl J
