Kagu is the new project from former Snakadaktal (RIP) member Sean Heathcliffe, and "Shadow of the Wind" is his debut solo effort.
Sentimental and sweet, the track begins with a delicate guitar melody, shortly followed by Heathcliffe's lightly raspy, slightly delayed vocals.
The soundscape remains fairly sparse throughout the first verses, while a beat slowly appears alongside a pulsating synth. The next verse floats back down again, but the beat remains, building up to a climactic chorus. Ethereal instrumental layers quickly bloom and flourish while the atmosphere completely fills out before tapering off at the end.
Admittedly, there are a couple moments where the rhythm wobbles between carefully paced and tedious, but the rich beauty of it all wins out in the end.
We'll be seeing a lot more from the Melbourne artist next year. If this is anything to go by, we're in for a pretty special 2015.
