Why do we like this?

I am not even halfway through my SXSW coverage, but I can’t not write this review. “Golden” is the newest single of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Kaela Sinclair -- a teaser for her upcoming album. If you don’t immediately recognize her name, don’t beat yourself up too much, for there’s a good chance you’ve already seen her perform on stage in the past year.

In early 2016, M83’s mastermind Anthony Gonzalez announced a search for a new female singer and keyboardist for the synth-pop act, following the quiet departure of Morgan Kibby. Just a few weeks later, Gonzalez shared Sinclair’s addition to the band, calling her “perfect.”

If you caught M83 at any point during the last year, you have seen Sinclair. Her restrained demeanor, kaleidoscope hair, and sultry dresses all perfectly complement the on-stage beauty of the band. However, it is her voice that makes her a muse.

I have seen M83 live more times than I should probably admit, but my favorite performances have all been in the last year. Sinclair’s truly remarkable rendition of “Oblivion” probably reduced you to tears. The magic she brings to the band is undeniable, and I’m sure her own confidence on-stage has soared.

Now, she’s casting her own spells.

“Golden” is an alluring dream-pop single -- showcasing Sinclair’s latest talents for songwriting and singing. I love the touching lines, “I can't offer you much, but I can offer you some of my heart … I can't offer you much, but I can offer you some of me.” The video that accompanies the track is also exquisite -- playing like a mini-movie and adding just a pinch more grit.

A new album is set to follow, but it is not her first release. Her debut album, Sun & Mirror, dropped in 2013. But now she has the attention and spotlight of new fans across the globe. Hurry up and listen.
