Washington D.C.’s Julian, conceived and fronted by Julia Leiby, has come quite a long way since we last heard from them. Trading in their jangly twee tunes for smoother and dreamier numbers, the band now sounds tighter and yet somehow more out of focus -- or more of a soft focus, if you will.
Julian’s new single, “Low”, feels like a lonely sunset after a day full of disappointments. Creamy guitar effects and a melancholy croon mesh seamlessly to create a track that’s swirling with emotion in the humid summer heat. Something about the blend of blurry guitars and whispery vocals feels soothing and tranquil. There’s so much space in the instrumentation, and the reverb makes it perfectly atmospheric -- just hazy enough to make out the silhouette of the melody, as Julia Leiby’s voice glides across the smooth, velvety guitars.
The trio are set to release their newest EP, Real Distance, on June 15th via Fire Talk Records. All we can do until then is revel in the dreamy haze of Julia Leiby’s voice and wait in anticipation to find out what else they’ve got in store.
