L.A. artist Julia Holter has literally been making some noise of late, recently releasing a
FACT mix via Factmag in anticipation of her second full-length album
Ekstasis, dropping next month.
"Marienbad" is a single and first track off the upcoming release. Experimental to the max, Holter uses quirky, abbreviated, harmonious vocals to create an outrageously trippy effect. With layering techniques reminiscent of Julianna Barwick's deity-infused style, Holter takes us from a simple beginning to a multi-faceted ending with keyboards, loops, echos, drums, and maybe even a bit of magic.
As Holter wanders the tone of the song up and down, I'm reminded of Alice In Wonderland. It's as if each minute offers a different mystic musical experience, sometimes safe and sometimes frightful. An amalgamation of classic and future elements fuse together perfectly to create an experimentally profound experience.
