Joy Division are one of my favorite bands, so when someone decides to cover their work, especially a song of the magnitude of "Love Will Tear Us Apart," I'm always a little skeptical. It appears I had nothing to worry about as Barcelona born, London based performer Odina absolutely nails her take on the classic.
Named after Mount Odina in Northern Spain, Odina's stripped back cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" captures the despair and desperation of Joy Division's original. You can hear the pain and frustration in her raw, emotive vocals when she sings the famed chorus while the subtle instrumentation tugs at the heart strings. Speaking with Clash Odina explained:
The main body of the song is a live take of guitar and vocals that I’d recorded at 2 or 3am in my bedroom after getting back from a night out… There was something about that one take, it wasn't perfect, but there was so much emotion in it, it just felt very real. I decided to use it.
I think for me it's way more important to capture those rare moments, where there is so much emotion, without any filter, than to make everything sound perfect in a track. There is a certain kind of beauty in imperfections I think, as well.
Odina is certainly a talent to watch going forward and if you're digging this cover be sure to check out her other releases here.
