I was introduced to Jorja Smith a couple of weeks back with her debut single "Blue Lights." Now, the 18-year-old new-comer shares a brand new offering with “A Prince” featuring Maverick Sabre. And man, does it hit you in the feels.
Not the most objective of "music journalist" at the best of times, this track just made me melt. Her music is a breath of fresh air, as she weaves beautifully emotive stories between haunting soundtracks. Influences by a range of artists from Mos Def to Lauryn Hill are clearly heard, from her play on rhythm, to her socially conscious messages.
“A Prince” is her second single to date, and Jorja has teamed up with illustrator Yao Xiang, who hand-drew each poignant frame of the visual. The track likens her life experiences to fairytales -- with the innocence of her voice creating an eery effect when partnered with the hauntingly perfect Henry Purcell sample. Produced by Seemore, the track features Maverick Sabre, and pretty much became an instant favorite.
