Why do we like this?
I was thinking about magic today, how we use the word "magical" to describe moments, art, and music that seem otherwise indescribable or abstract. But the more amount of time I spend pulling these experiences apart as a writer or creator, considering how actual magic is mere illusion, the more clear the role of intention and logic in beauty becomes.
Deep thoughts aside, the word magic came to mind again when hearing Jordan Rakei's "Selfish." This is not an extraordinary song; it's not Disneyland magical, but it doesn't need to be. There's a simple, ideal mix of soul, jazz, reggae, dub, and voice, leading to a feel-wonderful groove. The lyrics slightly throw me off, but after the two-minute mark when the trumpet tempts and I swoon, all is forgiven.
Rakei is based in Brisbane, Australia, and you can keep with his experimental tunes and hear about his upcoming EP on SoundCloud and Facebook.
