Toronto-based singer/songwriter Jordan Alexander seems to have a talent for coming up with a catchy pop sound, at least going by “Take Me Out Tonight,” the opening track from her album The Lonely Hearts Club. The chorus is simple but memorable, and there’s a good beat holding it all together.
The latest single she is releasing from The Lonely Hearts Club is “Cool,” which takes a look at trying to work out a relationship. It’s a slower-paced track to the opener, and a bit more reflective. For me, it’s not quite as effective as “Take Me Out Tonight,” which stands out on the album.
Alexander’s songwriting draws on a combination of acoustic and pop musical styles. All in all, the album is a little too much in the pop mainstream for my taste. Some of the songs would sound better if they weren’t so polished. That being said, Alexander draws on her own experience to produce emotionally insightful lyrics, such as on the track “Great Escape.” Her music has received strong support from the LGBTQ community and she has been labelled as the next gay pop star.
