In the best way possible, Joji will never be as big as Drake or Beyonce. His music is too personal, his art is too innovative, his persona is too real. Yet precisely because of that, we love him to death. The way we love Frank Ocean and Childish Gambino.
Joji is also one of those artists that words don’t seem to help much in describing him and his music. In fact, it seems like they usually diminish his genius instead of better translating it to the listeners, but I guess we always feel this way about the art that actually moves us.
So let me just say this: speaking of the sonic side of "Sanctuary," Joji keeps on searching for new approaches to using his voice and with every new song he successfully expands himself more and more (that falsetto, am I right?!).
Speaking of the meaning (or the message) of the song, I believe Highsnobiety's Sydney Gore put it best, saying, "love is a complex galaxy," when describing the song.
