Why do we like this?

Some of the best things come in pairs, and one of those pairs includes Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford, the duo that makes up the indie-pop group, joan. The performers take inspiration from '80s pop and mess with catchy electronic pianos and guitars to add a modern touch.

I was ready to break out into dance as soon as I hit play for the first time. “love me better” is a fun and upbeat song that’s bound to get everyone in a good mood. Their energetic songwriting reminds me of Misterwives or COIN, who they’ve previously toured along with.

While Little Rock, Arkansas isn’t considered the main hub for synth-pop and electronic tunes, joan is bringing more and more of that sound to their hometown. The pair dropped their EP, portra, in 2018 and a handful of singles from then to now, only expanding their creativity in each release.
