“Brokenhearted” sends me back to the heyday of the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. This slow love song brings up some middle school dance memories, but Joan isn’t a Justin Timberlake rip off.
The pop duo adds their own flavor, showing off more of their electronic and synth side instead of trying to be a cheesy boy band. The clean keyboard and sparkling rhythm is modern as ever. The song focuses more on their vocals rather than fast-paced beats and synth, like in some of their previous tunes.
“Brokenhearted,” of course, is not acoustic, but Joan really stripped this one back. They threw most of their energy into the vocals and lyrics, which is where their emotion and heartbreak topples out from.
I've been following them for a few years now, and I was surprised how much this track highlighted a different side of their evolving style.
“Brokenhearted” is off their new EP,Cloudy.
