The arrival of Indiana-based producer Jlin has breathed new inspiration into footwork, a genre associated with a style of street dance that shares the same name.
While the high BPM that is characteristic of footwork already gives it an undeniable intensity, the result is nothing short of electrifying when combined with the jaw-dropping production found on this track.
Jlin creates a menacing vibe by adding haunting layers of piano, strings and vocal chants on top of crisp and biting percussion. Even though there is a lot going on sonically, it is the percussion that dominantes "Black Ballet." As a result, the underlying chaos is kept below the surface and the overall sound is amazingly concise and minimal.
While most footwork artists rely heavily on samples, Jlin crafts her compositions entirely on her own. Her music certainly embraces footwork, but her debut album Dark Energy shows that she has no intentions of following in the footsteps of her predecessors.
