Why do we like this?

Some songs get old fast, and some songs always spark inspiration in you every time you hit play. For me, "Mind Tricks" by Jeannel is the latter.

In a space of her own, her unique tone and texture stand out from the class of elite female vocalists many will compare her to. Her vocals feeling a bit more seasoned, sounding a bit more experienced, a bit more genuine.

A soft acoustic intro starts this one, beautifully. After a little over a minute you get some welcomed thumps that change the pace just slightly enough to keep you interested. Right under the two minute mark a thick synth that sounds more like a light bassline, chimes in. Then more synths, then everything but the string of a guitar cuts off again and all the meanwhile Jeannel is whispering honey in your ears.

At nearly six minutes in duration, you would think that your spoiled ears are ready to let this one go and hit the skip button, but something curious keeps happening every twenty or thirty seconds between the production and the vocal that just keeps you glued there.

A cool, strictly instrumental bridge happens after the four minute mark and continues passed the fifth until you get a quick "hey" from her. And then again, the mood mellows back down to the vibe of its humble beginning, and before you know it you miss her and hit replay just one more time.

Mood music.
