After over a year of radio silence, Michelle Zauner is back. After her 2017 album and a few singles here and there, we already had a wide catalog of different sounds. Who knew where Michelle would go next? Synthpop, apparently.
"Be Sweet" is, indeed, very sweet. The whole song is drowned in a familiar haze while thumping drums and catchy basslines push the song forward. There's a drive that feels similar to an LCD Soundsystem record, but with the dreaminess of an Alvvays or Real Estate album. You can catch a hint of vaporwave, even. It seems that Michelle has struck genre gold, and we haven't even discussed the hilarious music video yet.
Japanese Breakfast's new album, Jubilee, comes out on June 4th. It's a long wait, but I'm sure there's going to be enough to love about this new musical direction to make it worth the wait.
