Wimbledon's finest, Jamie T, has shuffled back to his spotlight, after an ambiguous five-year absence.
With a new album that drips with variety, Jamie Treays might just have made a huge comeback. "Turn On The Light" is fittingly one of the lighter tracks on latest offering Carry On The Grudge, but it stabs home its message just the same.
The reasons behind Treays' long hiatus are unknown, but by the evidence of "Turn On The Light," the years may not have treated him kindly. The lyrics "Turn on the light, 'cos it's dark in here, inside a life" are accompanied by a jolly chorus, masking any kind of outward discomfort.
The verses, meanwhile, are impatient and monotone, with Treays providing an unsteady stream of vocal artillery. It's relentless, morbid, and brilliant. Jamie T's voice is and always has been the voice of a modern poet, as communicative in its tone as with his lyrics. Here, the combination of melody and lyrics makes for a stripped-back serving of soul.
It is perhaps fitting that the final repeated lyric is "Oh take me far," given Jamie T's time away and the new musical steps he has taken. With this new album, he has proved himself to be 3-dimensional, and will most likely win new fans while tugging the strings of the old.
