Why do we like this?
Today's SOTD is blissful disco-house, with Australian producer Dom Bird's remix of Irish folk hopeful James Vincent McMorrow. Neither of these names may be familiar to many readers, but believe you me, that's going to change in the coming weeks/months/years.
James Vincent McMorrow is one of the great hopes of Irish folk. His track "If I Had a Boat" was chosen as the Best Irish Song in December 2010 by The Guardian, and he was featured as one of their artists of the day.
So what's all the fuss about? Well, for starters he's got an Irish accent and he makes "haunting, atmospheric, acoustic folk," which I have to confess isn't really my cup of tea, but fortunately Dom Bird has come to the rescue on that front..
Dom Bird is an Australian artist, and to be honest, I can't find out a great deal about him. This is his second remix, after a highly successful take on Flight Facilites' "Crave You." Much like Villa, Aeroplane, and Saint Etienne, Bird sees it as his mission to take what he gets his hands on and calm things down a great deal... and "calming down" folk is no easy business.
Taking what is, in my eyes, a fairly middle-of-the-road folk song and turning into seven minutes of Balearic style bliss is no mean feat, but it is accomplished with real panache here.
