Subtle and atmospheric, James Blake has shared his new song, “Life is Not the Same.” The track followers previous release “Say What Your Will” and both are due to feature on his new album, Friends That Break Your Heart, which is set for release on September 10th.
The lyrics are introspective, the melody dreamlike, and the heartbreak apparent. It’s a slow and tender number that performs a balancing act on the line that separates contemporary R&B and post-trip-hop and throws in some production flourishes in the form of multiple pitch shifts for good measure. Essentially, it’s a mournful ballad with some intriguing little details that really set it apart from every other break-up song you’ve ever heard.
Blake effortlessly weaves his sublime and heartfelt vocals with the visceral synths and enveloping basslines, resulting in a track that provides a delicious taste of the album to come.
