Melbourne's Jaala has returned with "Junior Spirit," following on from last year's debut album Hard Hold.
Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Cosima Jaala has a wonderfully diverse tone of voice, traipsing from brittle thinness, to raucous blues, to unhinged cries and back again with natural ease.
Taking cues from Grammy nominees and labelmates Hiatus Kaiyote, the jazzy instrumentation and playful vocals lay the foundations for a really gorgeous, musically impressive new piece from the Melbourne outfit.
At some moments I love the juxtaposition of the delicate, albeit commanding top line, and the bold, brassy bass rhythm; at others, the explosive screams and wild percussion builds up to boiling point with feverish excitement.
Hard Hold was a fantastic debut - one of Australia's best last year - and it's looking like Jaala have a helluva lot more left up their sleeves.
