Why do we like this?
Seattle-based band Ivan & Alyosha, named after characters from Dostoyevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov," have released a second EP, Fathers Be Kind, as of February 1. Focusing on topics like faith, love, and family, the EP definitely has a strong indie rock sound. Catchy melodies and personable lyrics make this five-track EP easy to listen to over and over.
Last year Ivan & Alyosha obtained deserved national notoriety from an NPR spotlight before SXSW. At the time, the group had one EP and a multitude of tour dates ahead of them. This year, the Seattle residents have put their noses to the grindstone, pumping out their latest EP with whispers of a full-length release later this year. Their 2011 tour kicked off February 4 in Seattle for a CD release party and continues throughout the states, also hitting up SXSW again.
Fathers Be Kind starts out strong with a title track, vocalist Tim Wilson imploring humanity (fathers) to literally be kind to their children. Throughout the EP (which runs almost 20 minutes), well-executed harmonies layered beneath thought-provoking lyrics playfully surround your consciousness. Listening to this, I am reminded the likes of Ra Ra Riot or another Seattle band, Hey Marseilles. Their palpable love for music and raw passion is evident.
To stream Fathers Be Kind in it's entirety and (bonus!) a free download, check out the Ivan & Alyosha official site.
