Today, Samuel Proffitt shares his debut EP, Blue Notebook No. 10, with the world. The Boston-based producer has already struck our attention with his singles "Sirens" and Sladky," which were dark, layered, and full of raw emotion. In sync with his release, which is braided with electronic melodies, Samuel Proffitt offered some courageous insight. Check out our interview below!
As a relatively young artist, your career began with dance festival stages and DJ booths. What was the reason or motivation behind the shift in your production from dance music to something a little more emotional, downtempo, and poetic?
Following the death of my roommate in late 2013, I realized that I needed to pour myself into something that would have a lasting effect on myself, as well as on the listeners. Samuel Proffitt is the merging of everything I hold dear, as well as what has led to who I've become.
Were there any specific artists who motivated and/or inspired you to help make the mold in which we hear today?
Absolutely. Discovery (Ra Ra Riot/Vampire Weekend), Ben Gibbard, Dallas Green, Andrea, Toro y Moi, Little Dragon, James Blake, ASTR, London Grammar, New Navy, Thomas Azier, DallasK, Bear//Face, Friendly Fires, Ta-ku, Bring me the Horizon, Phoenix... the list could go on forever
After the release of your new EP Blue Notebook No. 10, do you foresee a full-length album staying along the same emotional and raw lines, or will we get a glimpse of the dancier side of you as well?
While rawness and emotion is the defining mark of Samuel Proffitt, the LP will also have some pieces that are definitely more energetic than those on Blue Notebook No. 10.
Do you have any plans for future collaborations on the full-length?
I have a few things in the works at the moment. I can tell you that I'm working with Khai again on a few songs, but beyond that, I still have to keep just a few things secret
