Why do we like this?
90s nostalgia is in fifth gear with popular culture right now, including hip-hop. From NWA to underground Memphis rap, folks that were in single digits when DJ Screw first pitched down a tape are infatuated with everything from that era. At times this can induce eye-rolling, but once in a while someone is able to flip the fad a bit. Enter The Incomparable Shakespeare, a cat that was actually in Brooklyn when O.C. warned about getting hemmed up at Albee Square Mall.
Shaky Baby (only a Brooklynite would flip Shakespeare like that) comes through with his offering #InvincibleDream, boasting the standout 90s New York hip-hop tribute "Tried By 12 Brooklyn Kids." A song that combines two super tough BK song titles and three BK instrumentals, Shakespeare delivers the goods on this one. Beginning with the underground gem by Jemini The Gifted One, Shaky tells the classic coming-of-age drama over the classic beat before it gets invaded by The East Flatbush Project's monstrous instrumental that kids might remember from Shady Records' BET Award Cypher. Before the song's up, Shaky manages to lace MC Lyte's "Paper Thin" with some bars that are fresh for 2013.
I was not able to make the pilgrimage to the mecca that is New York until the early 2000s, but jams like this remind me that I missed out on the intangible energy of New York in the early 90s, and no amount of throwback embroidered beanies will change that. I ain't mad.
