Despite being my favorite Australian band, for some reason it's taken me almost two years to review an I'lls track on Indie Shuffle. I'm very happy (and also a little relieved) to finally be able to remedy that today with their latest single "Fifty-Phiphti," which came out yesterday through the band's own imprint Solitaire.
Continuing their penchant for poor spelling and lush, warm electronica, I'lls (pronounced Isles) have presented us with another gem. This track plays to all of the band's already established strengths -- interesting chords, elastic time signatures, and beautiful textures -- while moving in a slightly different direction, replacing frontman Simon Lam's vocals and the more consonant song structures of their early work with seemingly endless percussion loops and glitchy vocal samples.
All in all, "Fifty-Phiphti" stands out as one of the most interesting and exciting things I've heard all year. You can pre-order it on vinyl (I know I will be!) here.
