Every time a genre of music rises to stardom, backlash soon follows. Historically, genres tend to rely on the classics in order to survive that backlash, and slowly, like a chameleon, it assimilates back into that classic form.
During the backlash that the disco era faced, we began seeing shifts in music once again. We can see this if we take a look at the album Thriller.
Thriller explores different music genres, including pop, post-disco, rock and funk. According to Steve Huey of AllMusic, it refined the strengths of Jackson's previous album Off the Wall; the dance and rock tracks were more aggressive, while the pop tunes and ballads were softer and more soulful. The album includes the ballads "The Lady in My Life", "Human Nature" and "The Girl Is Mine"; the funk pieces "Billie Jean" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"; and the disco set "Baby Be Mine" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)"
Softer and more soulful ballads, is what stood out the most to me. That's what Ibexx's "Static" is.
For me, as the electronic era faces backlash for its success like never before, this is something a bit more left-of-field. Ironically enough, this is what music should be at its most bare-boned level. Pleasurable.
Soft vocals, incredible production detail from tracking to mixing and poetic lyrics. "Static" is a masterpiece. A sign of another seismic shift in genres that's lurking in the underground as we speak.
What will the next grand genre be? Do you know? Take a guess or let me know in the comments below. I'm curious to see what your forecast could be.
