Joshua Idehen's got rhythm. He recently released a first rate debut, Fires In The Park, as a part of Benin City. Now he's already back with a new band, Hugh, with a song as fresh and original as that one we covered back in April. Constant Gardner, over at Pigeons and Planes, accurately described the tune as a "downcast pop song." Perfect way of putting it.
The band consists of of Andy Highmore, Holly Bestic, Tino Kolarides, and Idehen himself. This song is their first release -- a saccharine synth piece featuring an undulating backbeat. I would generally describe the sound as electro, with Holly's hollow voice interlacing Josh's moving modern croon. As Pigeons points out, there's also a bit of spoken word, a "nod" to Idehen's past, with almost a minute of the second half taken up by his remarks.
Not much word in terms of upcoming release, so you'll just have to keep tabs on them via Twitter and Tumblr. Lots of promise here. Don't miss the boat.
(Aside: how nice is that song cover photography?)
