Why do we like this?
How To Destroy Angels (HTDA) is fronted by "head like a hole" Trent Reznor, his wife Mariqueen Marigold, longtime collaborators Atticus Ross, Rob Sheridan, and Alessandro Cortini. This upbeat industrial (huh?) track comes off the band's Welcome Oblivion EP and is one of the few structured and polished songs on the record.
The beat is funky and reminiscent of early 80s freestyle, but more subdued and haunted by the looped howls echoing in the background. Mariqueen's soft whispers come in and out of focus, warped through a screen of despair as a cacophony of sounds invade her space. In this latest effort, HTDA manages to find the balance between minimalism and texture. It's the empty feeling you get the moment you realize something bad might happen. It's the sadness of happy times.
