Three years on from the release of their favourably received album The Hum, Leeds collective Hookworms return with the epic "Negative Space," the first single from forthcoming album Microshift.
Like the title of the album suggests, Hookworms sound has changed during the past three years, with "Negative Space" falling somewhere between Yeasayer's catchy electronica and old-fashioned psychedelic rumblings. The first minute and a half is a synth driven dilemma evolving into a guitar heavy freak-out of flashing riffs and buoyant vocals before slowly fading out.
It's certainly a different direction for Hookworms but one that's certainly welcome. They've managed to encapsulate electronic and organic soundscapes into seven minutes of ear candy, having lost none of their creative spark during their three year absence.
Microshift will be out February 2 via Domino.
