I'm an immigrant, and Thanksgiving has been a conflict of interest since I took AP US History in high school. This Turkey Day is gut-wrenching. Besides the yearly reminder that America celebrates genocide, 2014 has underscores that point in blood with the Grand Jury decision not to indict Darren Wilson for the murder of Michael Brown Jr.
Many of us are angry. Many are tired. Many want to tune out, and while some can, most of us cannot. It's in that spirit that Homeboy Sandman's "Happy Thanksgiving," produced by Psycho Les of The Beatnuts, is a moment of solace for me.
Though the track isn't exactly whimsical (spoiler alert: the native narrating the storytelling track dies at the end), but by taking us inside the mind and behind the eyes of a nameless indigenous man, Homeboy reminds us of an indomitable spirit we can tap into during these trying holidays.
