Why do we like this?
Back in August last year, I reviewed the debut single Australian duo Holy Holy, the project of Melbourne's Oscar Dawson and Brisbane's Timothy Carroll initially formed when they both were living in Europe. "Impossible Like You" was (and still is) a fantastic song that I still get a kick out of when it pops up on my playlist, but I was getting pretty antsy to hear a follow-up from the band.
Thankfully, that follow-up is now upon us.
"House of Cards" continues on from where "Impossible Like You" left off in its expansive, and sometimes explosive, soundscape. Holy Holy has shown an incredible formula for building a track that a lot of bands should take note of. The best bit about it is the fact that you don't realize what's happening until the song's climax. Twirling guitar riffs and analog synths have been utilized to perfection, with Carroll's terrifically poignant vocals completing the story. I called their debut "one of the most impressive debut releases I've ever heard," and my opinion of their second single hasn't changed much from this.
Having just signed to record label Wonderlick Entertainment, Holy Holy are set to release their debut EP, The Pacific, out on March 28.
