I'm not an Odd Future fan. While I understand their appeal, especially with the easily influenced teenage audience, there's more style than substance when it comes to their output. I also witnessed their chaotic Coachella performance in 2011 and made an effort not to buy into the hype surrounding them.
Fast forward a few years, and while the hype still abounds, my opinion towards the group has softened. I don't think you'll see me writing about Tyler, The Creator or Earl Sweatshirt, who I still can't get around, but Hodgy Beats is a different story. I'm not sure if it's his A$AP Rocky-like flow or knack for choosing great beats, but I'm starting to come round to the New Jersey native.
"Alone" is the second track from Hodgy's sophomore EP, Untitled EP 2, immediately appealing to my hip-hop sense with its lurid, space-age beat, courtesy of Odd Future alumni Left Brain. Hodgy glides over the beat with raps addressing escapism, loneliness and previous relastionships, even crooning his way through the R&B chorus. Without a hint of the homophobic or misogynist lyrics often surrounding Odd Future material, "Alone" is a perfect example of the talent lying beneath the controversy.
