I am always impressed when a band out of high school makes the leap from aggravating their neighbors while jamming in a suburban basement to -- in the case of these guys -- releasing their first EP and announcing they're supporting an upcoming nationwide tour in early 2015.
That’s the short version of this four-piece's story out of the Twin Cities suburbs in Minnesota. Barely out of school themselves and ranging in age from 18 to 20, the members of Hippo Campus still go by the names they probably got called in the halls of their high school – Beans, Espo, Stitches and Turntan.
I chose to feature this track off their recently released debut EP called Bashful Creatures. In "a summertime kinda way," it embodies what a good young band is all about -- raw enthusiasm and adolescent energy mixed in with a touch of generational defiance and youthful bluster.
Upcoming tour dates and debut EP details are available from the Hippo Campus website and their SoundCloud.
