Dissolution of previous projects can be both rigorous and inviting, especially when change begets new challenges. Monika Heidemann, former lead singer of Brooklyn, NY's indie pop group Xylos, found herself starting anew when Xylos came to an end, but it did not upend her creative wants.
Instead, Monika self-recorded her upcoming solo debut, an EP aptly entitled Orphan under the moniker Heidemann, which is set to be self-released September 2, 2014.
The record, three original tracks followed by an incredible cover of ABBA's "The Visitor," is both masterfully playful, impacting, and superbly minimalist.
Nevertheless, the track that caught my ear was the song "Well Well" due to its frantic thrust and haunting mystery. And there is something tangible about this song outside of reminiscence and nostalgia that makes me want to put it on at every house party I frequent, especially as this cool summer gives way to a grey fall. It certainly will keep me charged and dancing.
Make sure to catch Heidemann on tour this August opening for Kishi Bashi!
