Why do we like this?

If indie music existed back in the wild west, this Australian-American musician would be the star. Hazel English fuses country and pop influences into a sound that’s all her own.

You can hear country twain subtly intertwine with synth and a hazy voice that floats above the melody. Although the song seems so old-fashioned, she puts a modern beat over the song. (I mean, never thought of the five and dime as a place to collect my thoughts, but hey, whatever works!)

The track’s snappy rhythm has something a little fiery and sassy in it that I adore. It’s the little things in the song that stick out, like the way she sings the words “going crazy” when the chorus hits. Her voice grows louder, adding emphasis to the words and coolly changing the direction of the notes. She repeats the same stanzas over and over again, but I was so lost in the sound that I didn't even notice at first.

This song is featured on her debut album, Wake UP!, that came out last month.
