I almost mistook this tune by Nashville's up-and-coming band Hardcastle for a new single by The 1975. But while this group of five might have similar guitar licks, they're developing a sound uniquely their own, which you can hear on their full EP out this fall.
"Millennial Attraction" is inspired by how intense emotions can get in relationships, according to the band. Their smooth vocals and upbeat guitar keep time to lyrical introspection on being spontaneously attracted to someone in the moment, "and not appreciating the person who actually matters to you on a deeper level – feeling like one has lost themselves to hedonistic values."
There's a bittersweet melancholy throughout the song, as without words it has a pretty positive tone. But the lyrics tell a different story: feeling close through the telephone, but honestly just feeling alone. A true millennial romance really wouldn't be complete without addressing the agony of long distance, texting, and feeling close to someone so far away. Now it has a proper soundtrack.
