While this remixed single may be technically formulaic, it knows how to grab my attention. What begins as an ensemble of plucked violin strings quickly subverts my expectations with fuzzed synths, spliced vocals, and a basic drumkit. Bubbly high-pitched notes scatter in the background.
Next thing I know I'm swimming through some sugary synthpop. The looped refrain is chopped up, diced, and regurgitated to form the most seductive and driving rhythm. I get whiffs of frustration and catharsis.
Mura Masa expertly arranges his source material. The LA-based pop band's vocals are manipulated just enough to maintain their original intimacy, while producing something fresh.
And the ending is just as satisfying. Distortions emerge from all angles and the track devolves into a collage of delays. It takes me back to Bon Iver's 22, A Million—perhaps not a simple coincidence.
