Talented Melbourne duo Haarlo has just released “Love’s Gone," a slice of slinky electronic pop infused with soulful vibes.
Haarlo comprises vocalist Stacey Gardiner and producer Jonathan Steer (whose production credits include none other than Hiatus Kaiyote, Ainslie Wills and Ben Abraham), and the duo is no stranger to releasing richly textured and powerful electronica. Their debut single, “Easier,” was featured on MS MR’s curated mixtape Track Addict Volume II alongside Aluna George and MØ, and their latest single follows suit with a tantalising mix of electro-soul and neo-pop.
“Love’s Gone” gets straight to business as Gardiner’s soulful vocals take over after a brief ambient introduction. The sparse electronic beats simmer as the chorus approaches, and suddenly you’re dropped into an intoxicating world of halting beats, airy vocals and melancholic electronica. The duo push and pull the musical elements, building them up and then stripping them back, mirroring the sensation of indecision and confusion that the track is all about: “I think your love’s gone … I think I wanted more from you.”
Listen once for Gardiner’s seductive vocals, a second time for the stunning chorus, and a third time because you won’t be able to resist it. I’m excited to hear more from Haarlo on their upcoming sophomore EP, set for release later this year. In the meantime, watch out for their collaboration with house duo Cut Snake.
