Gungor, named for the collective's lead singer Michael's surname, returns with I Am Mountain. Sharing songwriting and vocal duties with his wife Lisa, the group (which can balloon between 3 to 10 members) has drawn comparisons to Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, and Bon Iver.
Though Michael has been active as a musician since 1999, it wasn't until the couple moved to Denver in 2007 to found Bloom, a progressive non-denominational church community, that they started recording as Gungor.
In 2010, their debut Beautiful Things was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album category and the title track was also nominated for Best Gospel Song.
I Am Mountain sees the group veering away from the "Christian rock" label while conveying a type of galactic spiritualism that transcends the traditional genre with an assuredly more indie sound self-described as "alternative, folk, textured and experimental." This is true of both their sound and lyrics. On the title track, Michael sings "I am mountain, I am dust/Constellations made of us" over a swirling plinking piano, ethereal tones, and Lisa's booming choir call that paints a scene of wondrous creation -- a topic Michael is actually published on.
Currently in the midst of a 60-city tour spanning the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, you have no excuse to miss this ethereal band on the rise.
