Why do we like this?
I love surf pop, but it's not one of the more intricate genres of music going around. Brisbane trio Gung Ho have released a single, "Twin Rays," which adds some substance to surf pop while still maintaining its laid back and summery vibe.
Having supported numerous up-and-coming Australian bands including Jinja Safari and The Holidays, Gung Ho are one of numerous surf pop acts coming out of sunny Brisbane. Based on "Twin Rays," they look to be one of the better ones.
From the single's first moments, Gung Ho draw you in with a heavy bass riff and sliding guitar. Reverbed, withdrawn vocals and driving drum flourishes finish off this song nicely. Gung Ho have taken the raw essence of surf pop and added a few precise touches to give this song some character.
Apparently the guys have a debut EP in the works, so more of the same infectious sounds to come it seems. Delightful.
