Why do we like this?
Jim Lawrie's transition as a musician draws plenty of similarities with former Fleet Foxes drummer Father John Misty. Having played drums in a number of bands for the past 10 years (including local favorite Eagle and the Worm), he's stepped to the front of the stage in recent years as Grizzly Jim Lawrie. After releasing his debut LP Paying my Debts from the Grave, the talented storyteller is back with a new single.
"Midnight Run" is a folk rock jaunt, with Lawrie's hazy vocals taking center stage. The Grizzly Jim Lawrie project includes members of a number of Australian bands (New Gods, Buckley Ward, the Toot Toot Toots), but the collective sounds tight enough to have been playing together for years.
This is a really beautiful song, one which has that rare ability to transport the listener to another place entirely (which is even better when you're listening to it at work like I currently am!). The single comes with a B-side, a cover track "My Pal" from 80s Melbourne band God -- check it out here.
