Assailing, actionable, and outraged is how I would sum up what punk culture is and means to be. It has nothing to do with spiked hair, three chord structures, shitty hooks, and anti-capitalism, as those are merely attributes to an evolving, employed, and exercised culture.
In fact, one could argue that punk is exactly what college is supposed to be: an institution that instills in us a sense of individuality built on the premise of moral obligations and societal responsibilities. Yet, just like college, the punk culture has been taken for granted.
However, there are a few who distill the world as it happens and synthesize it into art. As Egyptian street artist Ganzeer recently stated in the New York Times, "(artists) are not the driving force, we are not the people pedaling, but we can connect ideas and by doing so" move a culture or society as a whole.
Brian Moss, lead singer of Great Apes, is one of those inculcators.Moss has always put forward a persistent and outspoken form of punk music that speaks to the detriments of unequal progress in a city seen as wholly progressive, San Francisco.
Nevertheless, even when getting real like on their new single "Go Niners (As Told by Telegraph Hill)," off their upcoming EP Playland, Moss and Great Apes are able to supply songs that are outright infectious.
