Why do we like this?
Hailing from Philadelphia, Grandchildren are an effervescent and intriguing collective with an thoroughly engaging sound.
Everlasting, Grandchildren's latest full-length that dropped this September on Green Owl Records, is a beat-driven, sentimentally chaotic album that portrays as a montage of memories from songwriter Aleks Martray's life.
Once the drums and joyous acoustics start playing, you know that you're in for a musical treat. A sonic collage of the maudlin and undisputed rawness, the album takes you on a road of musical eccentricities -- blended tribal beats, varied electro-acoustics, rugged folk melodies -- all of which are based on recordings and muddled memories from Martray's journeys across Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa.
From the beginning of the first track, "Cold Warrior," you undergo the restless and harsh percussions pounding you until Martray's unconventionally soothing voice takes over and pacifies all severities surrounding you. The rhythmic hailstorm of "Cold Warrior" renders reverence to Martray's father, a high-ranking military officer who's devoted his life to bringing our country, and his family, back to the way things used to be.
The more memorable of tracks, "Saturn Returns" takes you through several phases of song succession. From tantalizing drumbeats and melodic guitar hooks to hazy harmonies, this song does not lack depth in any way. The brashness and ever-changing mellow echoes sounded so unique that I was hooked immediately.
Everlasting is quite the melodious medley. Whether it's veering the listener excitedly through fluctuating mentalities or giving them a heart attack, the album comes together and finally coheres into a properly radiant musical triumph.
