Golden Coast goes soft moombahcore.
While there's nothing inherently wrong with that statement, as that is where pop music has been heading since Jack Ü decided to become a thing, future bass overtook trap, and mainstream rap jumped on the train, it does mean there will be an over saturation of similar ideas. And thankfully, Golden Coast, as artists, continually make music that's aware without pandering to the lowest common denominator.
Sure, their new track "Recess" does sound primed and ready for placement on The CW. Sure, it's got the feel of current pop radio. Sure, this track is going to bring in oodles of young listeners who sink their teeth into the claps, the bass, the snares, the finger snaps, and the hook which literally is begging to go out and play.
Credit is given where credit is due, though. This song is infectious, masterfully manipulative, and just plain damn good. That's nothing you can hold against the gents in Golden Coast as their name is a declaration of what they're ultimately about: sunshine, upbeat feelings, and everything else you can stereotype about the beautiful beaches of California. And their most recent track resembles that to a tee.
