Why do we like this?
Although it's the best summer city in the world (Charles Barkley's words!), there are only so many Chicago winters one can live through before bolting to a warmer climate. Gold Motel was essentially birthed from this idea.
In 2008, Greta Morgan of The Hush Sound escaped the frozen tundra that is Chicago in favor of the greener pastures of Southern California to soak in the sun and musical inspiration. Seeing up to six concerts a week, she returned to Chicago in May 2009, and teamed up with Dan Dusynski of This Is My Smiling to form Gold Motel (after literally picking the name out of a hat).
Their first album Summer House is cozy and inviting. A quick collection of 10 catchy songs, it is instantly accessible.
Listening to this album is like putting on summer goggles where everything is sun-drenched and warm. It has even allowed me to ignore the fact that it's mid-April, and there's a fresh dusting of snow on the ground here in the Windy City.
