The Australian scene is well known for its tropical dance with the likes of Flume and Peking Duk at the helm. On the flip side, you’ve got its rich guitar scene, ranging from the raw garage rock of DZ DEATHRAYS to the psychedelic melodies of Tame Impala. With GodWolf we introduce a more subtle dance sound melded with beautiful vocals and a softness that gives it a future R&B slant.
Electronica duo Joe and Tom formed in Melbourne a few years ago with the intent of “blending the ethereal with the vicious” -- an impossible feat, you may argue. On “So Much More Than Me,” the ethereal is definitely apparent with the electronic lead production, but the darker side for me is hidden within the lyrics in this piece.
The aural experience is smooth and ebbs in and out of fully realized compositions and simplistic vocal lead verses. Lyrically, you’re taken through a summary of a previous relationship that culminates in the line: “You deserve the best in life, not like before, you deserve so much more than me.” Whether this is a satirical mockery or genuine heartfelt outpouring following a wrong-doing is unclear, but the basic premise is one that most of us have faced or experienced once in our lifetime.
With two tracks featured on the Triple J’s Hottest 100 chart at beginning of this year, it's clear the Australian music scene is onto this emerging act. But with the strength of this track, it feels like a good time to introduce GodWolf to more ears!
