Australia v. England for the Ashes is one of the biggest sporting events between the two countries, and us Aussies have been on the losing end of for the past two encounters. For those of you not in the loop, this is the longest standing cricket rivalry of all time. While we are fielding a weak team, the appointment of Darren Lehmann as head coach is sure to galvanize the team and make for an exciting series.
What does this have to do with music you might ask? A montage of previous encounters between the teams was played during the build up to the first test, soundtracked by Katie Noonan's gorgeous cover of Gnarls Barkley's hit "Crazy."
For the uninitiated, Noonan is an Australian singer songwriter who was once the front-woman for alternate act George. Since the band went on hiatus in 2004, Noonan has pursed a variety of projects, most successfully when venturing into the genres of jazz and opera. Her cover of "Crazy" is gorgeous, adding a greater depth to the tune, subverting the original poppiness for a jazzy lounge feel that utilizes Noonan's exceptional voice.
A great cover that's worth a listen. Now back to the cricket. C'mon Aussies!
