Why do we like this?
This week marks the sad passing away of Gil Scott-Heron at age 62.
From the Telegraph: "Gil Scott-Heron, who died on May 27 aged 62, was a composer, musician, poet and author whose writings and recordings provided a vivid, and often stinging, commentary on social injustice and the black American experience; his declamatory singing style, allied to the overtly political content of his work, made him widely recognised as one of the inspirational figures of rap music."
With the passing of such a legendary musician, it's only right for us to honour him at Indie Shuffle. We've decided to do that by bringing you two of his best songs. The first, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"is what brought him to the attention of the world, back in 1971. It is arguably one of the first ever rap songs. The second track we're sharing "I'll Take Care of You," is what brought him back to the attention of a younger generation, his collaboration with the xx's beatmaker-du-jour, Jamie xx.
The world will miss Gil Scott-Heron dearly. While I'm New Here may have been his first album in 16 years, he was still hugely relevant to contemporary music by the huge number of artists he's influenced, through hip-hop, soul, jazz and funk. If nothing else, it must be said that Scott-Heron's legacy will live on in the artists of today and tomorrow, both through their music and the advancement of political issues. In the meanwhile, the world will reflect on the passing of one of the all time greats. Rest In Peace.
