It's amusingly appropriate that an artist named Ghosts has a song called "Haunted." Complete with saturnine, eerie grayscale artwork, it seems they really play to their aesthetic on this one.
Instead of being followed by a supernatural presence, this track chronicles the feeling of being tormented by the memory of a former lover. While the lyrics are somber in subject, the ceaseless kick/snare pattern and mellow yet melodic drop keep the song steady and balanced.
Immersive synths bleed through percussion as Josh Roa's vocals echo in the background, creating an introspective atmosphere. "Haunted" provides a downcast respite from the typical house tracks we've been hearing lately.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like house has become disproportionately joyful with summer upcoming. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing, but I'm all about music that captures the full spectrum of human emotion.
"Haunted" reminds me of "I'm Not Alone" era Calvin Harris or, more recently, "Invisible" by Kaskade and Skylar Gray, carrying a melancholy message with hopeful modern elements.
