I seem to use the Antony Hegarty vocal comparison a fair amount in my reviews (maybe I'm just naturally drawn to androgynous, melancholic music), but the similarity that Londoner George Cosby draws to the Antony and the Johnsons frontman is almost uncanny.
"Cold (Live Piano Version)" is a heartbreaking tale of treachery, infidelity ("you ran off with my brother"), selfishness, and letting go ("be on your way, I don't need you, I don't need you") all articulated in a minimalist arrangement that relies on masterfully placed, poignant piano chords to push the piece along. Yes, it's sad, but it's also very, very beautiful.
Cosby plays his first performance with a full band supporting fellow singer-songwriter Freddie Dickson at Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen in London on November 22. I'll be the one in the corner with the box of tissues.
