You know when you hear a song, and it kind of reminds you of a few other songs but not in a bad or repetitive way -- in a really great way?
That's how I feel about "Soak," the new single from Washington outfit Gems.
Opening on a deep, hollow beat, the syncopated rhythm gets into your head almost immediately. The dual male-female vocals lead a beautiful tango, while the instrumental layers are rich, deep, and encapsulating. There's a gorgeous breakdown towards the end, grounding the rhythm and bringing the full atmosphere back down to earth. The harmonized vocals plead through the echoes and effects: "How do I sleep without you? How do I dream without you? How do I breathe without you? How do I say this to you?"
Gems' debut album Kill The One You Love comes out on October 30 via Carpark. You can catch them on tour opening for Autre Ne Veut, kicking off on October 9 in LA.
