This isn't Gaspar Sanz' first feature on Indie Shuffle. Jason reviewed "Scene Of The Crime" in 2018, "Gaspar Sanz caught my attention...I'm talking the oldschool style that we all fell in love with." Needless to say, it racked up some nice numbers from our listeners.
Now, the Australian rockers are back with their first single of 2020, "Cheryl." Stylistically speaking, the four-piece have adapted to a myriad of sub-genres within the indie umbrella. For example, "Meanderthal" reminds me of the Strokes, "Scene Of The Crime" is reminiscent of Empire of the Sun, and "Alone" reminds me a bit of Fitz and The Tantrums. The impressive malleability of Gaspar Sanz makes it no surprise that "Cheryl" follows a more pop-driven approach, topped with high energy and catchy lyrics.
Here's how the group found inspiration for the track:
"This song was inspired by a cat called Cheryl who used to live with Jimmy (singer) and Sammy (drummer). Cheryl was a stray who was living on the roof of our other flatmate's previous residence and after a period of time, he ended up adopting her. She was very old and had a litany of health issues, but was a beautiful and gentle old soul, who had clearly seen some shit. The meows that are featured in the song are from Cheryl herself. Jimmy followed her around the apartment with a microphone for about half an hour to capture them."
